Subject:Hi. I'm B-Naut. It's been a year since my last blog. BIG UPDATE!

I had no clue how bad I am bout posting stuff online until I just saw "Last entry 59 weeks ago". I suck at viral broadcasting. I know. I'll try to do better. Sorry y'all.

Anyway, this is a BIG update.

Ready to R O C K in the USA

I am the new DJ for a rock band in Atlanta by way of Detroit + Los Angeles. The band is called Detroit Mutant Radio. We basically answer the question, "What would Red Hot Chili Peppers sound like if they did hiphop?". So yeah. Wrap your head around that. Better still, hook up with the band on your favorite media outlet at iLike, GarageBand, YouTube, FaceBook, MySpace, CDBaby, Amazon.com, and any of the hundreds of Google search entries we have.

I met up with the band a few weeks ago thanks to an ad on Atlanta CraigsList. I played my first live show with them August 30th @ the Apache Cafe in downtown ATL. OMG that was so fun. We ended up being the house band for poets from DefPoetrySlam and rocked out 2 sets in between. I even managed to slip in a quick solo hip hop mix with a bit of Jurassic5, KRS-One, Beastie Boys, and De La Soul.

I got pics of the band!

On The Remix Front

Just like Dragon*Con 2008, I worked closely with the TrekTrack director and staff again for Dragon*Con 2009. Eric Watts came up with the idea to give the annual StarTrek Miss Klingon Empire Pageant new theme music. Ordinarily, they loop the Klingon Battle Theme over and over ad nauseum as each contestant is introduced and plunders the stage's runway. After a dozen contestants, this gets a bit redundant. So, Eric approached me asking for a new mashup between the Klingon Battle Theme and RuPaul's "Supermodel (You Better Work)". Granted, I've used much stranger and nerdier source material for my remixes, so I accepted the challenge. The result?
I'm Too Klingon For This Supermodel - DJ B-Naut vs StarTrek vs RuPaul

Speaking of Dragon*Con 2009
As it turns out, Dragon*Con is the unofficial anniversary for my girlfriend and I. We met at D*C 08. More to the point, we were a con hookup that should have never been. I found her by herself poolside at the Hyatt Regency looking extremely cute in her corset and boots as I walked by. I thought to myself, "Hey cutie. How YOU doin'?" She replied, "I'm fine. Where are you going?!" I stopped dead in my tracks and realized I was actually thinking out loud and she heard me when I said it. The more we talked, the better things went. The rest, as they say, is history and I couldn't be happier.

Just now recovering from Dragon*Con this year. It's amazing what a handful of Advil and 14 hours of sleep can do. I needed it though. I didn't get back to my hotel room until at least 3 to 7am from Friday through Sunday night. I got plenty of good networking done. I set some speakers on fire at one of my parties. (Tee hee. I think it's awesome. But in my defense, I asked one of the sound guys if the sound system was ok before they blew up.) I already have an invite to DJ there again next year in the works. More details yet to come in another post.

Oh yeah. Just joined Twitter. Follow me at: http://twitter.com/DJBNaut

Later y'all.

Thats right y'all. I've returned to Dragon*Con for three shows:

Friday
August 29 at 10:00 PM in Rooms 601 and 602 of the Marriott
X-Track presents "The First X-Track Party"
Cash bar will be provided by the hotel.

TrekTrak presents "The Rainbow Flag Party"
The Rainbow Flag Party is an event specifically for the GLBT community at Dragon*Con and will include a cash bar provided by the hotel. Music for this party will be high-energy pop tunes and dance remixes from the '80s and '90s, songs that are radio hits that everybody knows.

Sunday
August 31 at 7:00 PM at the Atlanta Sheraton in the SAVANNAH Room
"Happy Hour at Ten Forward"
Federation personnel and Klingon warriors from around the galaxy meet, greet and snarl at each other in this enormously popular gathering, where anything can---and does---happen! Featuring hot dance music from the '70s, '80s, 90's, 2000s and beyond! Snacks and refreshments provided by the USS Republic NCC-1371, the Atlanta chapter of STARFLEET International."

...and...

As a bonus to the X-Track and TrekTrak parties, we have not 1 DJ but TWO! All three shows all weekend will become a tagteam DJ showcase : DJ B-Naut versus Drifter. Drifter and I will switch control of the decks all night long providing two distinct styles of DJ finesse for the eyes and ears.

As always, I will have CDs on hand for sale at $10 each.
Bring your dancing shoes. You'll need them.

I just entered a national remix competition sponsored by Guitar Center and BeatPort.com! =)

My remixed mash is called, Junkyard Dog - (UNLEASHED Remix) - DJ B-Naut vs. Riot in the Rock/Alternative category.

Winners are chosen by popular vote on a 1 - 5 star rating system. Vote for me and vote often!

Oh yeah, just as an added bonus and "Thank you" for all the support y'all have given me in the past, I subliminally tossed in the phrase "B-Naut" and "LiveJournal" scrambled in my entry. See if you can catch where "LiveJournal" is in my mashup! If you can tell me where I put "LiveJournal" in the song (minute and second)...I'll personally send you something wierd!

Click the logo below to go vote.

1st Round Winners will be announced June 27th, 2007.

(I've also made the entry plus a few of my other exclusive remixes available through my MySpace page.) Feel free to add me as a friend there too.

Thanks in advance for the support!

As most know, I don't post names or much personal stuff here. Today will be an exception. After some thought, I have chosen to eliminate dead weight from my life. I feel it is long overdue that I quit making apologies for the way I am...quit asking for the support of people who could care less about me...and most of all quit thinking that everything is always my fault. There are people who I have kept around for "old times sake" that are as useful as a trailer hitch on a Yugo - sure, it's a strain to make it work, but why would I want do it for so long?

So, as an open letter to those who have suddenly found yourselves deleted from my LJ, my MySpace, my cellphone, and all my IM connections: I QUIT. Go fuck yourselves. For the past year and a half, the whole bunch of you have caused me little else but frustration, anguish, disappointment, and pain. Loyalty and respect are NOT things I take lightly. Today you will learn that having my trust and my friendship are privileges. I'm tired of the two-faced, awkward smalltalk. Feel free to continue to talk about me, as I know there is little I can do about that 500 miles away. But the general consensus that I'm a selfish bastard is the result of peer pressure and not truth...which proves to me how weak-minded a select bunch of you are. [Which, by the way, I'm now helping build a local youth center for a non-profit organization and somehow I'm still a selfish inconsiderate megalomaniac? Could somebody explain to me how that works? Something isn't right with that at all.]

It is totally out of character for me to sever people from my life, but you have left me no choice. Dead weight is dead weight. By now you know who you are. I have managed to create a better future for myself by myself (again), and it looks as if that's the way it will continue to be.

(sniff, sniff)...I love the smell of burning bridges in the morning!

Subject:B-Naut Goes to Barkley
Time:10:22 pm
Current Mood:[mood icon] amused
As an unexpected turn to my evening yesterday, I had some random guy fork over some tickets to see Gnarls Barkley at The Tabernacle here for their final US homecoming tour date in Atlanta.
Some poor schmoe who gave up his tickets to me.

Drifter poses proudly with the free tickets to the show.
My partner in crime, Drifter (the Val Kilmer look-alike shown proudly posing with the free tickets we scored) and I arrived to the venue as the opening act was finishing their set. As to be expected, it was a packed house, standing room only. The crowd was a very cool and broad hodge-podge of different ages and demographics. As soon as the enormous Gnarls Barkley banner dropped from the ceiling to provide the backdrop for the band, the whole place cheered wildly.

We arrived late to the concert thinking they hadn't set up yet. Turns out we were at the wrong stage and the concert was upstairs.  The crowd goes nuts waiting for the road crew to set up for the main event.
After waiting for the roadies to prepare for the arrival for the main event…the arena went dark. Fog filled the stage. The lights came up. The band was on stage pounding out a cover of “We Are the Champions” by Queen as Cee-Lo Green joins them on stage dressed in a Centurion General’s costume waving a plastic sword all around. Danger Mouse and the remaining members took their places all dressed in togas, sandals, and Roman Empire-esque armor. Cee-Lo took the mic and announced, “Gnarls Barkley could not make it tonight. So instead, we have on stage the hardest working band in showbiz – Chariots of Fire.”

A plethora of songs were played from the infamous St. Elsewhere including Transformer, Necromancing, The Boogie Man, The Last Time, Feng Shui, and Crazy (naturally), plus a few others. (By the way…listening to their songs on CD or the radio hardly does these guys any justice at all. The talent and raw energy of hearing the soul and rock fused together in a no boundaries kind of performance in front of you is easily reminiscent to Sly and The Family Stone or Parliament. It’s just something you need to hear on stage to really get a grasp of everything.) The big surprises came when Gnarls Barkley did some cover tunes from The Greenhorns and The Doors in between the songs they were already expected to play.

Outkast and members of Atlanta's own Dungeon Family say hello to the audience.
And since this was their homecoming appearance, Cee-Lo gave a quick shoutout to his son celebrating his birthday and to The Dungeon Family as Outkast joined them on stage to say howdy to the fans.

Subject:Remix Hotel ATL
Time:03:25 am
Current Mood:[mood icon] pleased

One week ago, I was privileged enough to attend the Remix Hotel in the Renaissance Waverly Hotel near the Cobb Galleria. There, I saw some amazing equipment being demonstrated from vendors like Stanton, Rane, Roland, and a few others. I spoke to a few of the vendor reps and have a decent chance of getting on board to perform corporate-based demos, provided I jump through a few hoops. I met the owner of one of my favorite record shops based out of Texas, EatMyBeats.com. I got t-shirts, brochures of stuff I can't afford right now, and CDs from other independent artists like myself.

Most importantly, I was there to network my ass off like never before. I passed demos to local radio DJs from Q100 (although I doubt if he'll do anything with it but use it as a coaster), Gigantor from Evol Intent, the owners of Satellite Records (both ATL and NYC), one of the 3BadBrothers, and more. I met up with Bone Crusher's manager. But the icing on the cake for the week was meeting some long time heroes of mine: Hank Shocklee (producer and creator of Public Enemy), Chuck D, and DJ RedAlert (the 1st DJ from the Boogie Down Bronx who helped perpetuate the early Hip Hop scene to make it more than just a passing fad).

Hank was the coolest, most friendly guy I've met. Every time I passed by him in the hallway, he'd make a point to say hello. Chuck was hard to get to because the convention also doubled as the Billboard Hip Hop and R&B Conference, so he barely got a free moment to really speak to anyone. Red Alert was just hanging out taking everything in. I was lucky enough to get my copy of "Yo! Bum Rush The Show" on vinyl autographed by Hank Shocklee and Chuck D in between panels. Below are pictures of myself sharing a landmark moment with these legends of the music industry.

Subject:Weekend highlight film...
Time:10:47 pm
Current Mood:[mood icon] content
Last Saturday turned out way better than I had planned. Possibly TOO well.

The weekend began with the usual lack of sleep from Thursday transferring to an early work day Friday morning. (I got sick while I was at work, which had me clocking out @ 3am in between trips to the men's room. Then I got 2 hours sleep and clocked in at 6am. Fun.) Impatiently I waded through the work day sleepy as hell. I got off at 6pm Friday evening. I planned to take a quick nap to refresh, clean the apartment, say hello to Scott, and then bounce out to shop for the party. Didn't happen that way. I woke up in my computer chair with one arm numb to the sound of Scott banging on my door wanting to be let in at 11pm. The house was a mess. I was still tired. I still needed to shop. So, I let him in and cleaned until 2:45am...sit down to rest a second and doze off... I looked at the clock and it's now 4:30am and I still need to shop for food and supplies for the party. I go shopping. I wound up with a $250 bill @ Wal-Mart, and pack all my stuff in the house in time to bounce to work an hour late.

I go to work Sat morning pumped full of chemicals, clock out @ 2pm, rearrange furniture with ScottC and BobTheZombie, set up my DJ system in the living room and we get to the bowling alley in midtown at 4pm. I do what mildly resembles bowling with a good 10 people from NeedCoffee.com there...They were waiting on me to show up to see what damage I can do with a bowling ball. I suck at bowling and ended up having a 9 year old outscore me, but I think I dented the lane and one of the balls so I'm happy. BobTheZombie whips out her own ball knowing better to fall for her "It's been a while since I've bowled" hustle....Widgett for a social hermit bowls very well. After a single game, we bounce back to my place for drinks, munchies and gaming.

We arrived at 6ish at my place. I mixed together some potent drinks in the 2-gallon Gatorade coolers. (One labeled "GA Peach Martinis" and the other was labeled "The Root Of All Evil" which was invented and named that morning.) I DJed. They ate and happily socialized. Q, Lamar, Allison and Grant dropped by to join us. ....Then I had a few of my DJ buds drop by and take over the music. My house was packed comfortably. It was The Lil House Party That Could. BobTheZombie whipped out a game of Zombies to help entertain/distract the natives. Everyone seemed to have fun. Around midnight, people started shuffling out.

But then one of the other DJs get a call offering a slot to DJ an afterparty in Midtown. They volunteered me for the slot despite how obvious it was that I was on my last leg and needed sleep. UMadman and the rest of them kept pushing for me to hit the afterparty and hand their asses to them DJing. I popped a few Red Bull and a multi-vitamin and packed up my records. "Let's do this!"

The afterparty was in a shady 3rd floor loft out in the hood near The Compound. We piled out of our cars and went inside before unloading our record bags. We needed to know if the slot was still open for me to play and if the host who called was still there. Luckily, nothing changed, and I got the green light to set up. I went out with Karma to go get my bags and headphones. When I did, there were even more people scrambling for parking spaces. I knew I'd have a great audience, which is exactly what I wanted since I hadn't played anywhere decent in a while. (Dayjob and life gets in the way sometimes.) My set went well. A lot of people crammed themselves on the couches in front of me and dancers were popping glowsticks. Those not dancing were bobbing their heads and tapping their feet to my music anyhow. I don't know how long I played, but eventually I blew the sound system twice. When people started realizing the technical difficulties were too much, they started to leave.

But before I left, the host has tentatively booked me for a 12-party series in 12 different clubs starting the last Friday in July. It's called Rehab. The point is to squash the negativity between a lot of the production crews in the Atlanta area and to bring the upscale clubs together with the underground club kids who rarely mix. Tank, the promoter, is bringing in a lot of Breakbeat, Drum&Bass, and Trance DJs to these shows rather than the normal Top40 and House DJs that get a lot of play in ATL. He's trying to offer something different and wants me to be a part of that. I said I'm down, but we need to work out details still.

Anyway, after I packed up, carried my crated back down three flights of stairs...I was met up by an old friend, Mr. Fantastic, in the parking lot saying, "Y'all need a PA system? I got one in my car ready to go. ...And Mr. B-Naut, I would LOVE the privilege of tag teaming with you." ...I replied, "You bastard. ... ... Let me call into work. I'll be up in a few."

UMadman and I didn't get home until 11am Sunday. I slept until work the next day.

For all those involved in making last weekend a success, I thank you. I also need to find a way to unload the excessive plethora of beer, liquor, and munchies that are piled in my kitchen. I'm open to suggestions. If you have any, please let me know.

Great news on the DJ front.

I auditioned for a new club out in Gwinnett/Duluth called The Bunker. (Located across the way from Wild Bill's - 2075 Market St Duluth, GA 30096 between The Shoe Carnival and a Vietnamese Resteraunt facing The Longhorn steakhouse and Barnacle's.) This place looks nice too. The entire club is lit up in blacklight reactive graffiti everywhere...on the walls, the tables, the floors, on and even the DJ booth. The dancefloor is sectioned off by chainlink fence - but don't let that fool you. The Bunker is indeed PLUSH and well thought out from top to bottom. I nailed the audition with flying colors. Two really proud moments during the audition was 1) when I saw the club owner breaking out the glowsticks and dancing to what I played, I knew I had the job...and 2) I overloaded the sound system twice to where there was no sound coming out of the speakers at all! =)

Tuesday night I get a call from Chris, the manager at The Bunker saying he wants me to come play Wednesday night @ 10pm. Naturally, I accepted. After my set, the club owner, Richard pulls me aside and tells me he wants me to play at The Bunker more because even though he had been told I was a good DJ through other people, he had no idea I was this impressive. He said he likes the way I play with the mood of the music and toy with the tempo throughout my set.

So it's official y'all.

I am now the new resident at The Bunker in front of The Gwinnett Place Mall in Duluth, GA EVERY Wednesday and the 2nd and Last Saturdays of the month! cha-CHING! If you want on my personal VIP guestlist at the club, let me know ahead of time and I will see what I can do. I'll be back to play again this coming Wednesday and Saturday Jan 28th.

The best part of this is that Richard plans to open 2 more clubs in the same area. So what does this mean? It means that I'll be playing at all three spots at least three nights a week! I can't wait. =)

Dear Santa...

Dear Santa,

This year I've been busy!

Last Tuesday I gave [info]fourlegs a life-saving blood transfusion (50 points). Last week I committed genocide... Sorry about that, [info]melissanmn (-5000 points). In June I punched [info]unsuburban in the arm (-10 points). Last Saturday I helped [info]grace_like_rayn hide a body (-173 points). In January I gave change to a homeless guy (19 points).

Overall, I've been naughty (-5114 points). For Christmas I deserve a spanking!

Sincerely,
djbnaut

Ever since I was a Lil' Naut struggling through my budding aspirations for fame and fortune 12 years ago, I always looked up to him. The booming car stereos in my neighborhood and in my family's shop thundered with his music pushing everyone's system and eardrums beyond what they were created for. He scratched in a way that added to his own remixes of classic b-boy electro and 70's R&B instead of cluttering up the sound. He introduced me to the raw devine power of an 808 kickdrum and used it to its fullest potential. His style and distinct sound was (and still is) clean, crisp, and has inspired me to be every bit the showman and producer you see today.

Who am I speaking so graciously of?

His name is DJ Magic Mike a.k.a., The King of Bass.

I have the great honor of being one of several local Atlanta DJs opening for my hero, DJ Magic Mike this Thursday, September 22nd at The Mark in Atlanta.

This is a life-long dream of mine to share the same stage with Magic Mike. I will be starting a 1hour+ tagteam set with DJ Soza (while everyone else is getting about 45minutes each to play...neener, neener, neener =P), kicking off the night's festivities at 9pm.

A few weeks ago, [info]stellabambino tossed me a tip that he saw an ad for a new club in Athens, GA called The Kultur Lounge that was looking for DJs to fill a weekly spot. So naturally, I tossed them the average form letter stating who I am, what I do, how I do it, etc. Along with that I do a little name dropping to tell that I've been places so I can sell myself a little easier.

Time passes by. I'm thinking that was another job application that is hanging in limbo going nowhere. But no! I found an email the other day from The Kultur Lounge. It said, "Give me a call regarding a DJ spot at our club ASAP. Sincerely, Mark Bell - Owner, Kultur". So here's the irony in all this. In my response to Kultur's ad I always make sure I drop in DJ 43, D:RC, Weatherman, and other DJs from Athens because UGA is where I started getting my big break. DJ 43's real name: Mark Bell. D:RC and Weatherman were either Mark's room mates for a while, or spent a lot of time with Mark hanging out. So in short, I wrote Mark an email telling Mark all about Mark so Mark can give me another job.

Ain't that something?

=========================================================================

Dragon*Con is in 15 days. I have until the weekend to get my both remixes of The Cow Song completed. One down, one to go. Ken Plume of IGN FilmForce and NeedCoffee.com is going to include my remixes as a part of the soundtrack for the Gonzo Film Festival. I'll have the Cow Song Remixes available for sale as a limited edition EP at the film fest as an exclusive to NeedCoffee.com and Dragon*Con fanboys and fangirls. Also included on the EP will be my own original mixes of Kim Wylde/Diana Ross, Madonna, The Beastie Boys, plus a few original instrumental compositions from yours truely.

Ok...more news.

My 2nd appearance on WREK 91,1FM will be scheduled sometime tentatively the middle to end of September. Wonderful. This gives me plenty of time to buy new records, get accustomed to them, and create an all new super-killer set. :)

In bigger & better related news, I will be put on the roster as one of several prestigious DJs to perform for a charity function being produced by Nate Fischer and www.Dance4Relief.org on Saturday August 13th in Atlanta.

Just a quick announcement...

I just got a call from Nate Fischer of WREK 91.1 FM (Georgia Tech's college radio station). Nate is the producer and on-air personality for EDM Sound System, which showcases the top Dance/Electronic Musicians and DJs local to the Atlanta area as well as internationally known acts. Over the past few years they have invited a plethora of only the hottest DJs and producers to play in their studio, making them Atlanta's authority on the underground dance music scene. They had me play a live 2-hour commercial-free set for them last April.

Mr. Fischer has extended the invite for me to come play a second session sometime mid-August. I'm still hammering out the details at the moment, but I'll announce the times and dates here as they come.

For those who don't live in the Atlanta area who are out of earshot from 91.1 WREK's airwaves, fear not. If you still want to hear my mix of high energy House, Trance, and anything else I decide to toss in... the radio station offers a simulcast stream on the Internet through their website. Plus, even if you can't hear the show live as it happens (via FM radio or live on the net), I will post links of WREK's archive here so you can download the MP3s of my mix at your leisure.

More news as it develops. (X-posted damn near everywhere I could.)

Subject:Looking forward to this summer...

It's true what people say...there's no rest for the creative and talented.

I just teamed up with Old Skool Entertainment (ATL) to help promote, perform, and produce a series of parties downtown this summer. They signed a contract with The Dyme in Buckhead as resident promotions for every Tuesday night. Old Skool Ent. saw potential in my DJing and business sense and decided to cut 42MegaTon in on the deal.

So, we'll be doing what we call "Roulette Rush Tuesdays". Every Tuesday night will be a different theme party. Doors open @ 10PM till 3am. There will be FREE well drinks from 10PM to 11PM and a different drink special every hour - so get there early! On June 14th, we'll be kicking off the summer series of parties with world ranked DJ, J-Break out of Orlando, FL! (J-Break was scheduled to appear with Jackyl & Hyde a few weeks ago in Atlanta, but was somehow cancelled. A lot of local fans are happy to see we quickly scooped him up to bring him back to ATL.) Rounding out the lineup of local DJs that night in the Main Room will be: D:Funk and (yours truely) DJ B-Naut...and then J-Break will close out the evening as the grand finale. Up on the rooftop we have: Groove Rooster and DJ Naferious booming basslines topside of the building for the whole block to hear. ...And what's a good summertime party without a Wet T-Shirt contest? Yeah, we'll have one of those too with a $100 cash prize up for grabs. (Note to Mrs. B-Naut: I had nothing to do with this.)

On June 20th at The Dyme, we'll be slowing down the tempo a bit with a Hip Hop night for the Roulette Rush party series. Details haven't been solidified yet, but I do know there is either going to be a $100 Open Mic Emcee Battle or a $100 B-Boy/B-Girl dance competition happening that week. Special Guest headliner TBA soon.

Also in the works for the Roulette Rush series include: foam parties, lingere contests, a Drum-n-Bass night, and a lot more world renowned DJs and performers. Somebody even mentioned we might have DJ Magic Mike and Atlanta's own T.I. drop in later on...but you didn't hear that from me. ;)

I also wanna throw out a quick reminder that Trinoc*Con is coming up soon. Trinoc*Con has hired me as Guest Performance artist this coming July 15-17 in Durham, NC. Adult registration for the entire weekend is still only $30 until June 18th.

More news as it comes. Later y'all.
